California Teachers Endorse Longtime Teacher Steve Bennett for State Assembly in District 37

California Teachers Endorse Longtime Teacher Steve Bennett for State Assembly in District 37

The California Teachers Association (CTA) has endorsed Democrat Steve Bennett, a longtime teacher and the leading candidate in the race for Assembly District 37 in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. CTA joins the California Professional Firefighters and the Sierra Club, who previously endorsed Bennett. The CTA represents teachers, counselors, librarians, social workers, psychologists, nurses and others who work in our schools.

Bennett, a member of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, has a 20-year career as a social studies teacher, counselor, assistant principal and coach. He understands the importance of increasing education funding that goes directly into our local classrooms.

“We’re pleased to support Steve Bennett because he will fight for much-needed school funding and resources our students need, including smaller class sizes,” said California Teachers Association President E. Toby Boyd. “As educators, we support Steve Bennett for Assembly because he has a proven record of fighting for our students – and of responsible leadership at the local level.”

Before being elected as a County Supervisor, Bennett served one term on the Ventura City Council. In addition to teachers and firefighters, Bennett is also supported by many local leaders, including fellow Ventura County Supervisors John Zaragoza and Linda Parks.

California’s Firefighters Support Steve Bennett

California’s Firefighters Support Steve Bennett for State Assembly

The California Professional Firefighters (CPF) have endorsed Steve Bennett, the leading candidate in the race for Assembly District 37 in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, joining a growing list of supporters including the Sierra Club. CPF represents firefighters throughout both counties.

Bennett, a member of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, has led the county to 19 balanced budgets in a row, helping secure funding to bolster firefighting efforts and make sure local firefighters and paramedics have the resources they need to battle wildfires and protect neighborhoods.

“Firefighters trust Steve Bennett to ensure we have the resources we need to keep the neighborhoods we serve safe,” said Brian K. Rice, President, California Professional Firefighters. “The California Professional Firefighters proudly endorse Steve Bennett for Assembly because he has a proven record of putting safety first.”

Bennett is an environmental champion who co-authored the landmark SOAR Initiatives (Save Open Space and Agricultural Resources) to protect open spaces from development. The SOAR initiatives require a vote of the people before land zoned for open space or agriculture can be rezoned for development.

The California Professional Firefighters join the Sierra Club, Ventura County Supervisors John Zaragoza and Linda Parks, local councilmembers and a growing list of local leaders and organizations supporting Steve for State Assembly.

A Ventura County Supervisor, Steve Bennett is an independent local leader who wrote one of the strongest campaign reform laws taking big money out of local politics. Before being elected as a County Supervisor, Bennett served as a local high school economics teacher, and a Ventura City Council member for one term. He is running to take his unique brand of independent environmental leadership and passion for good government to Sacramento.

Sierra Club Endorses Local Environmental Champion Steve Bennett for State Assembly

Sierra Club Endorses Local Environmental Champion Steve Bennett for State Assembly

Momentum continues to grow for Steve Bennett as the Sierra Club officially endorsed him for State Assembly, adding to his credentials as the clear environmental choice in the race for Assembly District 37 in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties.

Bennett, a member of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, co-authored the landmark SOAR Initiatives (Save Open Space and Agricultural Resources) to protect open spaces from development, and has led efforts to stop oil companies and other corporate polluters from contaminating air, land, drinking water and beaches.

“Steve Bennett has a track record of delivering policies that have a real impact in fighting climate change, protecting local open space and reducing air and water pollution,” said Alex Pujo, Santa Barbara County Political Chair of the Sierra Club. “The Sierra Club supports Steve Bennett for Assembly because he has demonstrated the courage to stand up to the special interests.”

The SOAR initiatives co-authored by Bennett require a vote of the people before land zoned for open space or agriculture can be rezoned for development. He also recently won the support of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors to ban the flaring of gas from new oil wells, blocked drilling over freshwater aquifers on the Oxnard Plain, and has played a major role in galvanizing Ventura County voters to stand up to polluters in the oil and gas industries.

The Sierra Club joins Ventura County Supervisors John Zaragoza and Linda Parks, local councilmembers and a growing list of local leaders and organizations supporting Steve for State Assembly.

Fast start for Bennett

Newsmakers with Jerry Roberts:

Fast Start for Bennett. We won’t know for sure how the seven wannabes are faring in the money chase for the wide-open 37th Assembly District race until next month, when the first full state campaign finance filings are due, but some hot-off-the-printer documents just submitted to the Secretary of State show Steve Bennett is off to a fast start. The former longtime Ventura County supervisor, who jumped into the contest at the last minute, reported raising $69,600 in contributions of $1,000 or more in just the first week of his campaign. Most of the money is from private individuals, described by his campaign as “mainly Ventura County environmental leaders and activists” who backed his previous campaigns. State law requires candidates to report large contributions within 24 hours of their receipt during the 90 days immediately preceding an election; with the election set for March 3, legislative candidates were required to report such donations starting Dec. 3. The only other contender with a significant big-ticket cash collection list reported this month is SB Mayor Cathy Murillo, who brought in $23,500 mostly from union groups, including $9,300 from the California State Council of Labor PAC, $2,500 from the Labor Institute and $2K from the Plumbers and Steamfitters International.

This Week’s Power Ratings. A completely subjective ranking of the 37th District Assembly candidates, accounting for up-to-date developments. The margin of error is plus or minus 100 percent.

1-Steve Bennett. Early burst of cash provides table stakes, as arrival of consultant Steve Barkan provides veteran political management.2-Cathy Murillo. Labor runs Sacto, labor wants Mayor Cathy.3-Jonathan Abboud. IV’s Favorite Son tells Santa Maria paper he’s already raised $70K in Bernie-style small donations.4-Elsa Granados. Twin endorsements from feminist groups should help with fundraising.5-Jason Dominguez. Could use a financial angel, but credit him for hanging in on tough city council issues with one foot out the door. 6-Charles Cole. Making life hard for reporters trying to cover you always a bad look for a candidate. 7-Steve Blum. SM Sun says he said he’ll raise less than $10K and doesn’t much expect to win.
